When it comes to your skin, the cleaner it is, the better, right? Well, not necessarily (plot twist). Over-cleansing will strip your skin of moisture, force it to produce extra sebum that’ll clog pores and cause blemishes, and break down the protective barrier that keeps all the bad stuff out. Bleurgh. So, how to avoid it? Scroll to see the dos and don’ts of cleansing your skin (*properly*).

Do a Morning Cleanse

Well, maybe. You don’t actually *have* to wash your face in the morning, you know. If you do an A.M. workout, then washing your face afterwards is a must. Otherwise? It’s down to your own preference - but it’s a good idea to at least rinse with water either way.

Top tip: Use cold or lukewarm water, never hot, or it’ll dehydrate your skin (who knew?).

✅ DO

*Always* Cleanse at Night

Your evening cleanse isn’t up for debate, though. It’ll get rid of any grime your skin’s picked up throughout the day, and prep it for your overnight skincare routine. Start with an oil-based cleanser like our Cultivated Cleansing Oil to remove the day’s makeup, dirt and grime (while leaving skin feeling moisturized and balanced), and follow up with your fave balm, wash or cream.

Use a Foamy Face Wash in the Morning

If you *are* doing a morning cleanse, step away from the foamy washes. Naturally harsher than other cleansers, they can strip your skin of all the (good) natural oils it builds up during the night to keep it protected and moisturized.

Psst, if your skin’s dry or flaky? Your morning cleanse might be to blame.

✅ DO

Use Something Lighter

Like our Luminous Cleansing Balm instead, particularly if you have super-dry skin. Gentler on skin, our buttery cleansing balm will freshen up your face first thing and help your skin lock-in much-needed hydration for the rest of the day.

Aim for that taut-skin feeling

Think that tight feeling means your skin’s squeaky clean? Nope, it’s actually a sign that your skin’s calling out for some serious hydration. What does that mean? Your skin will produce more oil to compensate, which means clogged pores and breakouts.

✅ DO

Look after your body, too

Skincare isn’t just for your face, you know. Our Cleanse + Awaken Body Wash helps to cut down the number of products you layer onto your skin. How? It cleanses *and* exfoliates skin in a single step, removing dead skin cells with scrub-free apple-derived AHAs. Since exfoliating exposes delicate skin, we use apple water to seal in hydration, too.
